Before you get started on your road trip, please check out our “Mechanic’s Guide to an Unforgettable American Road Trip”
There’s nothing like hitting the open road—just you, the highway, and wherever you’re headed. Whether you’re packing up the family minivan, riding with friends, or taking some time for yourself, a road trip is one of the best ways to see the country and make some great memories along the way.
But before you take off, make sure your vehicle’s ready for the trip. I’ve worked on enough cars to know that a little prep now can save you a big headache later. A quick checkup before you go can mean the difference between smooth sailing and sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow.
Here’s my top ten list to check before you start your to get your road trip:
● Check Your Tires: This is huge! Look at the tread for wear and tear, and make sure they’re properly inflated. Don’t forget the spare! Proper tire pressure isn’t just about safety; it also helps with fuel efficiency.
● Inspect Your Brakes: Squeaks, grinding noises, or a spongy pedal are big red flags. You need reliable stopping power, especially on long hauls.
● Fluids, Fluids, Fluids: Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid—check them all! Top off anything that’s low.
● Test Your Lights: Headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights. Make sure every single bulb is working. You need to see and be seen.
● Battery Health: Get your battery tested, especially if it’s a few years old. The last thing you want is a dead battery in the middle of nowhere.
● Wiper Blades: If your wipers are streaking or not clearing effectively, replace them. Clear visibility is non-negotiable.
● Belts and Hoses: Give them a quick visual inspection. Look for cracks, fraying, or bulges. These can fail without warning.
● Air Filter: A clean air filter helps your engine breathe better, improving performance and fuel economy.
● Emergency Kit: Pack essentials like jumper cables, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, basic tools, and some water. Better safe than sorry!
● Documentation: Make sure your driver’s license, registration, and insurance cards are all current and easily accessible. Planning a trip across the border into Canada or Mexico, make sure you bring your passport and paperwork confirming any medication you have.
